Siliguri is the gateway city to the Eastern Himalayas, and Gangtok is a straightforward NH10 run from here. A private taxi with doorstep pickup from your Siliguri hotel or home is the easy way up, and it's the same scenic Teesta-valley road used from the airport and railhead.

Expect around 4 hours for the 114 km. Because you're starting in the city rather than at the airport, you save a little time on the plains section.

The usual road is NH10 via Sevoke, the Teesta valley and Rangpo. Drivers know the diversions used during roadwork or landslide season and will take the safest open route on the day.

Which vehicle should you choose?
