Landing at Bagdogra (IXB) and heading to Gangtok is the most common way into Sikkim. A private taxi is the simplest option for families and anyone carrying luggage — you're met at arrivals and driven straight through to your Gangtok hotel without changing vehicles.

The road runs along the Teesta river on NH10, one of the more scenic national highways in the country. It's a steady climb rather than a dramatic one, but the last stretch into Gangtok can slow down in traffic, so plan for 4–4½ hours door to door.

Recommended route & major stops

The usual road is NH10 via Sevoke, Coronation Bridge and Rangpo. Drivers know the diversions used during roadwork or landslide season and will take the safest open route on the day.

Which vehicle should you choose?

A sedan comfortably seats 2–3 travellers with bags. Families of four to six, or anyone with extra luggage, are far more comfortable in an SUV, Innova or Innova Crysta. Groups can take a Tempo Traveller and travel together.

NH10 is generally in good shape, but during the monsoon (roughly June–September) landslide-prone sections can cause delays or diversions along the Teesta. Your driver will take the safest open route on the day; allow a little buffer in the rainy months.
