About the NJP Railway Station to Darjeeling taxi

New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the closest railhead to Darjeeling, so this is the shortest transfer into the hills — about 78 km and roughly 3 hours. A private taxi from the station is the simplest way up, especially with luggage after a long train ride.

The road broadly follows the toy-train's Hill Cart Road through Kurseong and Ghoom. It's slow and scenic rather than fast, so plan for around 3 hours.

The usual road is Hill Cart Road via Kurseong and Ghoom. Drivers know the diversions used during roadwork or landslide season and will take the safest open route on the day.

• Ghoom — Ghoom Monastery and the highest station
• Batasia Loop and the war memorial
• Darjeeling Mall / Chowrasta (limited-vehicle zone)

Which vehicle should you choose?

For two people with light luggage a hatchback or sedan is comfortable. Families of four to six almost always prefer an SUV or a Toyota Innova / Innova Crysta on hill roads for the extra space, higher stance and steadier ride. A sedan is fine for 2–3 people; families and groups with luggage should take an SUV, Innova or Tempo Traveller. Boot space matters after a train journey.

The last stretch through Ghoom and into Darjeeling can be busy in season. Central Darjeeling around the Mall has limited-vehicle zones, so the drop point may be a short walk from Chowrasta.
