Darjeeling to Gangtok is the classic combined two-hill trip: you drop from the Darjeeling ridge down to the Teesta, then climb the other side into Sikkim. It's about 100 km and takes roughly 4 hours.

Because you enter Sikkim at Rangpo on this route, Indian travellers should carry a photo ID for the check post. A private taxi keeps the same car and driver across both hills, which is the smoothest way to do it.

The usual road is descent to Teesta Bazaar / Melli, then NH10 and Rangpo into Sikkim. Drivers know the diversions used during roadwork or landslide season and will take the safest open route on the day.

The road drops a lot in altitude before climbing again, so it feels longer than the distance suggests. In the monsoon the Teesta section can see landslide diversions — your driver takes the safest open route.
