Bagdogra Airport to Gangtok: A Complete Travel Guide

The route

From Bagdogra you head towards Sevoke and cross the Teesta at the Coronation Bridge, then follow NH10 up the river valley. You enter Sikkim at the Rangpo check post — carry a photo ID — and continue through Singtam for the final climb to Gangtok.

It's a steady, scenic climb rather than a dramatic one, but the last stretch into Gangtok can slow in traffic, so plan for the full 4–4½ hours.

Best vehicle

A sedan is comfortable for 2–3 travellers with bags. Families of four to six, or anyone with extra luggage, are better in an SUV, Toyota Innova or Innova Crysta. Groups can take a Tempo Traveller. More detail on our vehicle fleet page.

Permits

Indian nationals need no permit for Gangtok — just an original photo ID for the Rangpo check post. Restricted areas like Tsomgo Lake, Nathula and North Sikkim need a separate Protected Area Permit. See the Sikkim permit guide.

Flight delays & timing

Bagdogra has limited late flights. Share your flight number when booking so the driver can track it; we build in buffer time. If you land late in the day, tell us so we can plan the hill climb for the safest timing.

Monsoon note

Between roughly June and September, landslide-prone sections along the Teesta can cause delays or diversions on NH10. Your driver takes the safest open route; allow extra buffer in the rainy months.
